A New Life
Prologue
A Maximum Ride Crossover fanfic

“Max!  You can see the islands from here!”  Angel called out.  The six year old bounced on her feet in excitement, pointing at the horizon.  Her curly blonde hair blonde hair bounced wildly with each step.

I placed my hand on the girl’s head and looked where she was pointing.  There it was the Flock’s destination.  “We’re almost there sweetie.”  I said.  We were standing at the front of the ship “Ragnarock”.  Pretty big name for a converted fishing trolley.

My name is Max.  Maximum Ride.  Age 16.  Weird name, I know.  But I picked it out myself, and I like it.  I’m the “leader” of the Flock.

Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gazzy and Angel.  The Flock.  The “bird kids.”  Years ago we had been experiments in a lab.  Scientists had genetically altered us in the womb so that we were born with wings.

Real wings.  On our backs.  What?  You thought we just called her Angel for fun?  And yes, the Flock can all fly.  Go figure.

We all grew up in the same lab.  Poked and prodded for experiments.  Then we escaped.  Then we were caught again.  Then we escaped again.  It’s a long story.  But the short version is we’ve been on the run for a long time.  Hopefully though, this place is the last place we’ll have to run to.

“So.  What’s it look like?”

I turned around to look at Iggy.  Iggy, a year younger than me, is blind, but you wouldn’t know it normally.  He doesn’t carry a cane or anything like that.  He usually just uses his other senses to get around as well as other people.  Kinda like Daredevil.  He even has red hair.

“It’s an island.”  A voice suddenly came from next to me.  “Too far away to see much more than that.”

“Gah!”  I jumped away in surprise.  “Fang!  I’ve told you not to do that!”

“Do what?”  The raven haired boy cocked an eyebrow.  “Walk up to you?”  He smirked at me.

Typical Fang.  He’s probably the quietest 16 year old on the planet.  And he always forgets he can do it.  That or he’s messing with me.  Hard to tell.  But Fang is still one of the most amazing guys I know.  He’s smart, insightful, a good leader, (But not as good as me, obviously.) and I can always count on him.

But then, he’s my boyfriend.  So I guess it’s hard not to feel that way.

Nudge came up behind me.  “Wow that island’s huge!”  She declared.  “How many people do you think live there?  Are there stores?  Maybe even a mall?  I hope they-“

“Take a breath Nudge.”  I interrupted.  “I’ve never been here either.”

Nudge quieted down, but it was obvious that she was excited.  Nudge is our 14 year old fashionista, sorta.  Her mocha colored skin and long brown hair stand out, and she likes it.  Being on the run has been hardest for her.  Nudge, more than any of us, has just wanted to live a regular life.

I just hope I’m able to give it to her now.

“But there are people there right?”  Gazzy walked up to stand next to his little sister.  “Or are we gonna live there Swiss Family Robison style?”

Angel’s older brother Gasman, Gazzy as we like to call him, was a pretty typical eight year old.  He likes pranks and fart jokes.  He also has Angel’s curly hair, but he likes it trimmed short.

We’re the Flock.  And in case you missed it earlier, we have wings on our back that let us fly.

Not that you could see them right now.  When we had to go around normal people, we kept our wings tucked under our jackets.  Keeps people from staring.

“Don’t worry.  They fit a surprising large amount of folks on these islands!”

We all turned to look at the Ragnarock’s captain.  “Thanks for bringing out here, Mr. Loire.”  I said.

The captain swept his long hair aside and smirked.  “Please, call me Laguna.  “Mr.” sounds so stiff!  Doesn’t suit me at all!”

Well, he wasn’t wrong.  We’d met Mr. Loir- Laguna, through my “father” Jeb.  Note the quotations.  I only call him my father because I carry half his genetics in me.  Jeb was on the ship too, but I’d rather not talk about him.

Anyway.  Laguna here had heard our story, and apparently broken down into tears.  He immediately offered to take us somewhere that the mad scientists and creepy super corporations couldn’t find us.  A small group of islands that I’d never heard of.

It seemed too good to be true, which usually means it is.  But Angel said he wasn’t lying.  (Oh yeah, Angel can read mind.  Forgot to mention that.)  That meant he was either telling the truth, or someone was messing with him.

So the Flock got together with my mother, Dr. Martinez, and we all talked about it.  Don’t worry; Mom’s not an evil scientist doctor.  She’s a veterinarian.  She even has another kid, my younger sister Ella.  (She doesn’t have wings though.)

We all talked it over for what felt like days.  In the end, we decided to give Laguna a chance.  Mom and Ella even made the huge decision to come with us, and I will love them forever for it.

And Mom had Jeb come too.  I don’t want to talk about it.  They were in their cabin.  Ella was seasick, and Mom was looking after her.  I didn’t care what Jeb was doing.

So we all loaded up on Laguna’s ship and headed to this supposed paradise island.  The Ragnarock wasn’t a huge ship.  Apparently Laguna and his friends had modified it so that they could go looking for something.  I didn’t pry, but I got the impression that they were actually looking for someone.

“Say…”  Laguna looked around at us.  “Why are you guys so bundled up?  Aren’t you warm in this heat?”

I looked around at the Flock too.  Each of us wore a baggy jacket that we used to hide our wings under.  But it WAS hot.  This really was the tropics after all.

“We’ll be fine.”  I said.  “We’ll have to get used to wearing these a lot from now on, right?”  The others all nodded.  Laguna just got a thoughtful look on his face.

“Is that so?  I wonder if you won’t change your mind when we get to the island.”  He smirked.

A large man stepped out onto the deck and approached Laguna.  The man was Ward, a veritable giant that was a head taller than any other person I’d ever met.  He tapped Laguna on the shoulder and gestured at the ship’s bridge.

“Huh?”  Laguna gasped.  “Oh right.  I have to contact the folks on land now.  Thanks Ward.”

Ward nodded as Laguna left.  He then turned to look at us.  He gave us a look and I realized he was trying to ask us something.

“Don’t worry, we’re okay.”  Fang answered.  “We don’t mind the heat.”  Apparently he had gotten the message before us.

Ward just nodded again and went back to work.  Apparently Ward had injured his throat during a fight.  It had left him with a massive scar up his face, and made it hard for him to talk.  But he didn’t seem to have trouble getting his point across.

What Laguna had said early bugged me a bit.  What had he been talking about?  I almost wanted to ask Angel about it, but knew I couldn’t.  Before we had left, I had given the girl a thorough talking to about using her powers.  She was not to read any minds unless she felt there was danger.

She had obeyed that edict so far.  It would hardly be a good use of my authority if I had use her powers now, would it?

“Hey check it out!”  Nudge exclaimed.  We’re getting so close that we can see the birds above the island!”  She pointed to the sky.

She was right.  I could see what looked like birds flying in above the island.  They were pretty big ones too from the looks of it.

“So you can see them from here eh?”

I jumped again for the second time today.  Kiros, the third member of the ship’s crew, had snuck up on all of his.  He smirked widely.  “Keep looking closely.  There’s something special about those birds.”  She walked away, chuckling to himself.

This was starting to bug me.  What was so special about this island?  I squinted as hard as I could at those birds.  Even with my enhanced vision (Yeah, the flock all has raptor vision too.  Except Iggy, obviously.) They were too far away to make out anything but their wings.

But as the Ragnarock drew closer, some things started to become more clear.  I could see each pair of wings individually.  Then I could see their wings were different colors than the bodies.  Then I could see their heads, their legs, their arms.

My eyes went from squinted to wide in an instant.  I could hear Nudge gasp loudly while Gazzy and Angel let out surprised squeaks.  Iggy poked Nudge’s shoulder, asking her what she saw, but the girl was too stunned to answer.  I felt Fang’s hand wrap itself around mine.  I looked at his face and saw it smiling at me.  I smiled back and finally answered Iggy’s question for him.

“They aren’t birds.  They’re people.  People with wings!”

Another hour passed before we reached the island.  Mom and Ella came out on deck and were just as surprised at the news.  Jeb came out too, but his shock was more controlled.

It wasn’t the last surprise we got though.  As the ship pulled into port, I saw more than just bird people.

There were regular folks there.  Dockhands running to and fro doing whatever it was dockhands did.

But working alongside the bird guys and the not bird guys were some kind of lizard guys.  They had long snouts and their scaly bodies came in blues, greens, and even reds.  They stood taller than the humans, and had what looked like floppy ears hanging off their heads.

We had all ditched our coats.  It was too hot for them, and we were pretty sure we wouldn’t need them anymore.

As the Ragnarock finally settled into its dock, I spotted four people waiting nearby.  A girl about my age with neck length red hair wearing a white dress shirt and a blue plaid skirt.  Another girl, but older than us, maybe 19?  She wore a white shirt and plaid skirt too.  One of the lizard men, this one had blue scales and wore a fancy looking suit.  The last was an older man with thinning hair and a slightly hunched stature.  He also wore a suit.

The red head had a hand drawn sign that read “Martinez Family,” like folks at airports do.  It was safe to assume they were waiting for us.

As the gangplank was set down, the older man stepped forward.  “Dr. Martinez I presume?”  He asked as Mom stepped down.

“That’s us.”  She waved a hand at all of us.  “This is my family.  Thank you for meeting us here Mister?”

“I am called Raminas.” He shook Mom’s hand and turned to look at all of us.  “As mayor, I’d like to welcome you all to the Destiny Islands!”

There’s a place out there for everyone.
A place where you can be yourself without out fear.
Some folks get lucky, and get to live in those places.
What's this?  A Maximum Ride Kingdom Hearts crossover?  Wow!

Yeah, so I haven't updated in a while.  I whipped this up in one afternoon just so I could give you guys something.  Now I feel less guilty.

As for why the Destiny Islands have Bangaa and Aegyl from FF12, it comes fro ma bit of thinking I did involving Sora and the others.  Imaging if so saw a duck the size of Donald talking (Well, sort of talking.  WAWK!) to you out of the blue.  Wouldn't you freak?

Well Sora didn't.  This leads me to believe that the Destiny Islands are inhabited by more than just humans. So I figured the Bangaa would make good island folk.  And having the Aegyl there gives me an excuse to crossover with the Maximum Ride series!

You may have noticed that the story telling method is a bit different this time around.  That's because the Maximum Ride book series were told almost completely in first person from Max's POV.  Anyone got any comment on how I handle it?

I started a new multiparter without even finishing any of my other ones.  Oh god I'm turning into Dinojake.  (Cookie if you know who that is off the top of yer head.)

I don't own the Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, or Maximum Ride series.  This was done for fun, not money.
